2017 Recipient – Yellow Brick House
Domestic abuse does not discriminate – it occurs across all ethnic, racial, age, religions, economic and social groups. The victims of domestic abuse are our sisters, daughters, friends, co-workers and neighbours. In response to this diversity, Yellow Brick House provides four core services: emergency shelter, transitional housing, outreach services and public education. The two emergency shelters offer a safe place for women and children experiencing abuse and violence. Outreach services offer an array of programs to women and their children in various stages of their abusive relationship. Reta’s Place, transitional housing facility, provides housing units to women and children transitioning from the emergency shelter to living independently. Yellow Brick House Public Education Program raises awareness of he prevalence and devastating effects of domestic violence, and reinforces their community presence so that those affected know where to turn. Services are available in over 25 languages, are free of charge, and fully confidential. Yellow Brick House helps over 5000 women and children each year in York Region.
